After being taken with the 5th selection in the 2004 National Draft it didn’t take the AFL world long to recognise that Lance ‘Buddy‘ Franklin was a star of the future.
His size, pace & athleticism stamped him as a potential match winner. The signs of things to come for Buddy were there in his first year (2005) when he played 20 matches & kicked 21 goals as an 18 year old. He continued that rapid improvement in 2006 with 31 goals from 14 matches after starting the year with injury. 2007 was a break out year for Buddy when he delivered (as a 20 year old) an outstanding year up forward for the Hawks. He dazzled observers with some freakish efforts including a 9 goal performance against Essendon early in the season & finishing the year with 7 goals in the Elimination Final against Adelaide including the match winner on the final siren. Buddy finished the year with 73 goals to win the goal kicking award for the Hawks. In what was a major surprise he narrowly missed All Australian selection. Season 2008 was the year of the "Buddy" as week in week out he accumulated marks, kicked bags of goals and led the Hawks to victory. He was instrumental in Hawthorn's season which ended in ultimate success on the last day of September. Buddy not only featured prominently in front of goals where he took the 2008 Coleman Medal, kicking 102 goals in the home and away season, with an additional 11 goals in the final series, but also finished with 20 votes in the Brownlow Medal count which is outstanding for a power forward as they are often overlooked in this award. After a fantastic year by the Hawks and Buddy in 2008, the 2009 season was rather disappointing as the Hawks struggled with injury throughout the season to narrowly miss the finals. With the lack of ball supply up forward, Buddy spent more time up the ground to assist the midfield. Astonishingly even with less time in the forward line Buddy finished the year with 67 goals. Buddy is still just 22 years of age, and has the football world at his mercy. Playing Honours:
